
The Royal Windsor Horse Show first started in 1943 to help raise funds for the war effort. It has continued to run every year since.
The sport of combined driving had a royal beginning. In 1971 Prince Phillip turned 50 and decided to give up playing polo. With a stable full of horses and carriages, he “borrowed” four horses and started training for the new sport of combined driving. In 1973, the European Championships were held at Windsor. Prince Philip served as president of the FEI from 1964-1986 and took a leading role in developing the rules for combined driving.
